What if...? Exploring the Impact of Genomics in Aotearoa

Genomics Aotearoa is excited to present our new video series, What if...? Genomics in Aotearoa, produced by Damian Christie from the Aotearoa Science Agency.

5 images showing the video series on the Radio New Zealand website

This series, funded by Genomics Aotearoa, highlights the many ways genomics is being used to tackle some of Aotearoa's most pressing challenges. The series aims to spark curiosity and inspire conversations about the transformative potential of genomics in everyday life.

The five videos in the series cover the following topics:

  • What if genomics could help save an endangered species?
In 2018, the kākāpō became the first species in the world to have its entire population’s genome sequenced. "How is the information being used today to help conservation?" This video looks at how genomics aids in protecting the critically endangered parrot.

  • What if we can use genetic testing to beat cancer?
"Around 25,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year in Aotearoa," this video highlights. Genomics is helping to detect cancer sooner and treat it more precisely.

  • What if we sequenced every infectious disease in Aotearoa?
During the Covid-19 pandemic, New Zealand researchers led the way in sequencing the virus and understanding its transmission patterns. "How did this information help manage the pandemic?"

  • What if we sequenced every waterway in New Zealand?
"Living things leave tiny traces of DNA as they move around their environment," this video explains. Scientists are using environmental DNA (eDNA) to monitor water quality by identifying organisms living in New Zealand's rivers and streams.

  • What if genomics could safeguard our food supply?
The rapid warming and periods of droughts due to climate change will impact our ability to grow food. Researchers are investigating ways that genomics can help safeguard our food security in the future.

These videos are available on the Radio New Zealand website, accompanied by an episode of Our Changing World that explores the future of genomics in Aotearoa. The full What if...? series provides an accessible and engaging way to learn about how genomics is shaping the future of the country.

Two more videos are currently in development and will be released in 2025.
